The purpose of this study is to investigate the concept of love in Ralph Cudworth’s religious thought. In Cudworth’s theology love, with goodness and wisdom, is one of the attributes which fully define the essence of God. This topic is also connected with Cudworth’s vitalism and his idea of divine justice and providence, and so it concerns the discussion of the three types of fatalism in The true Intellectual System of the Universe. In Cudworth’s anthropology love expresses the research of God performed by human soul after the Fall and it is the necessary presupposition for moral action. Analyzing Cudworth’s use of pagan, patristic and biblical sources and underlining the similarities between his theory of love and the ones conceived by other Cambridge Platonists, it emerges that Cudworth’s conception of love as a spiritual attitude and as a way of conceiving the relation between man and God are grounded more on evangelical truths than on the main principles of platonic tradition.
